Statistics on Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) 2020

In the current global economic uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) registered a net outflow of RM11.9 billion in 2020 which decreased by 54.0 per cent as against RM25.8 billion in preceding year.


Despite the decline in DIA flows, the overall DIA position increased to RM518.8 billion while the investment income dropped to RM18.4 billion.


Debt instruments was the main DIA component contributed by extension of loans to abroad. Meanwhile, equity & investment fund shares recorded a lower value as a result of higher dividend brought back from abroad.


Services and Manufacturing were the main sectors for DIA flows while income was dominated by Services sector, followed by Manufacturing.


Major destinations for DIA flows were Canada, United Kingdom and Indonesia. Meanwhile, income of DIA was mostly generated from Indonesia, Singapore and the Cayman Islands.
