Statistics of Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA), 2022

Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) registered a net outflow of RM58.6 billion in 2022 as compared to RM19.4 billion in the previous year, the highest ever recorded since 2014.

In terms of position, DIA expanded to RM607.5 billion as at the end of 2022 (2021: RM546.5 billion).

Meanwhile, investment income recorded RM49.3 billion from RM58.8 billion in 2021, attributed to higher profit retained abroad albeit lower income received from equity capital by Malaysian companies abroad.

DIA flows were predominantly in the form of Equity & investment fund shares with a share of 91.9 per cent contributed by higher equity injection and profit retained abroad. In the meantime, Debt instruments recorded lower net outflow as a result of loan extensions and activities in trade credit.

Services and Mining & quarrying sectors were the main contributors for both DIA flows and income.

The largest investment flows were mainly to the Netherlands, Indonesia and Singapore. Likewise, Malaysia investors to Singapore, Indonesia and Turkmenistan attained the highest earnings in 2022.
