Statistics of Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) 2021

Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) registered a net outflow of RM19.7 billion in 2021 as compared to RM10.2 billion in the previous year as a repercussion from the improving global economy after the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In terms of position, DIA expanded to RM547.0 billion as at the end of 2021 (2020: RM515.1 billion). Similarly, investment income also increased to RM59.3 billion from RM17.9 billion in 2020, attributed by higher income received from Malaysian companies abroad.


DIA flows were predominantly in the form of Equity & investment fund shares with a share of 61.7 per cent attributed by higher profit retained abroad albeit lower outflows in equity. In the meantime, Debt instruments recorded higher net outflow as a result from activities in trade credit.


Manufacturing and Services sectors were the main contributors for DIA flows while income was largely in Manufacturing sector, followed by Services.


The largest investment flows were mainly to the Netherlands, Canada and Indonesia. Meanwhile, Malaysia investors to the Netherlands, Singapore and Indonesia attained the highest earnings in 2021.
