BOP’s Participation in International Programme - Regional Workshop on FDIS

Regional Workshop on Foreign Direct Investment Statistics (FDIS) : "Strengthening the Methodology and Practice for Enhanced Compilation and Dissemination of FDI Statistics in ASEAN Member States (AMSs)"


This regional workshop is jointly organised by ARISE Plus and ASEANstats with the participation of official statisticians working at National Statistical Offices of ASEAN Member States. This workshop was conducted virtually on 15-17 June 2021 (Tuesday-Thursday) and attended by four officers from the Balance of Payments Statistics Division (BOP) as representatives of DOSM.

The workshop aims to strengthen the methodology and best practices towards enhancing the compilation and dissemination of FDI statistics, particularly in FDI Outward and FDI Inward Stock as well as FDI by ultimate investing country.

Ms. Noraniza Ibrahim, statistician from the Balance of Payments Statistics Division presented “Malaysia’s experiences in the compilation of FDIS”. This presentation covered topics on the overview of Malaysia's FDI, compilation practices in Malaysia, the system for FDI data compilation and Ultimate Investing Countries (UIC) compilation. The presentation also highlighted the strengths & weaknesses in the data compilation system.

This workshop also brings interest discussions between AMSs on the issues in the compilation of FDI statistics at national and regional levels. ARISE Plus FDIS Expert, Ms Yesim Sisik was the chairperson and technical expert who shared and explained on topics such as Asset-Liability versus Directional Principle, Ultimate Investing Country Concept and Valuation of Positions. This workshop also presented on the WGIIS workplans and findings from the Results of Stocktaking Exercise for AMSs on FDIS.
