Balance of Payments (BOP), Fourth Quarter 2020

Malaysia’s current account continued a surplus by recording RM19.0 billion in the final quarter of 2020, led by the higher net exports of Goods at RM42.9 billion and smaller deficit in Primary income which narrowed to RM7.1 billion. Nonetheless, Services logged a higher deficit of RM14.2 billion as compared to earlier quarters in 2020 due to Transport, Construction and Travel.


Financial account in this quarter recorded a lower net outflow of RM10.8 billion (Q3 2020: net outflow RM35.2 billion). FDI turned around to an inflow of RM6.1 billion from an outflow of RM0.8 billion in the preceding quarter. DIA registered a net outflow of RM5.4 billion as against RM2.2 billion in the last quarter.


The cumulative current account balance for 2020 was RM62.1 billion, the highest surplus since 2011. FDI recorded a net inflow of RM13.9 billion and DIA was RM14.1 billion.
